SmartFabric Services for Leaf and Spine

There are two types of SmartFabric Services (SFS):
- SFS for Leaf and Spine
- SFS for PowerEdge MX
This page only applies to SFS for Leaf and Spine. For PowerEdge MX information, click the PowerEdge MX button above.

Note: The terms Top-of-Rack switch and Leaf switch are interchangeable.

SFS Supported Switches

SFS is supported on the Dell PowerSwitch models listed in the table below. SFS does not run on other Dell PowerSwitch models or 3rd party switches. Any combination of the leaf and spine switches listed in the table below may be used with the exception that leaf switches must be deployed in pairs (1 pair per rack). Each leaf switch in the pair must be the same model due to VLT requirements.
Maximum SmartFabric size: SFS supports up to 20 switches in the leaf and spine fabric, with a maximum of 16 leafs (8 racks) and 4 spines.
Minimum SmartFabric size: The minimum fabric size is 2 leafs and 0 spines. If spines are used, at least 2 are required in production environments.

Note: The links in the table below point to the product support page for the selected switch.

1For new VxRail deployments (not upgrades) using VxRail 7.0.400-7.0.411, see this article: New Deployment Option for SmartFabric Services with VxRail.
2Before upgrading to VxRail 8.x, or VxRail 7.0.450 or later, SFS with VxRail installations that were originally deployed with VxRail versions 4.7.xxx or 7.0.000-7.0.3xx require decoupling. SFS with VxRail installations that were originally deployed with VxRail versions 7.0.400-7.0.411 will require decoupling only if Automated VxRail Switch Configuration was set to Enabled during deployment. (If this was set to Disabled during deployment, decoupling is not required. Refer to New Deployment Option for SmartFabric Services with VxRail for information about this setting). Decoupling procedures are available on SolVe Online under VxRail Procedures > Miscellaneous > ‘How To’ Procedures > Change other VxRail cluster settings.
3A VCF on VxRail deployment is a Dell Technologies Services engagement only. Please contact your Dell Technologies sales representative for more information. VCF is only supported with VxRail 7.0.400 or later, including 8.x. If VxRail 7.0.400-7.0.411 is used, Automated VxRail Switch Configuration must be set to Disabled during initial VxRail deployment as shown in New Deployment Option for SmartFabric Services with VxRail. For supported VCF/VxRail combinations, see Supported versions of VMware Cloud Foundation on VxRail.
4Two-node VxRail clusters and VxRail vSAN stretched clusters are only supported with VxRail 7.0.400 or later, including 8.x. If VxRail 7.0.400-7.0.411 is used, Automated VxRail Switch Configuration must be set to Disabled during initial VxRail deployment as shown in New Deployment Option for SmartFabric Services with VxRail.
5For Isilon/PowerScale backend connection support, see PowerScale Ethernet Back-end Network Overview.

Notes:
- To ensure your environment has the latest fixes and features available, use the latest versions listed.
- For new/greenfield deployments with single-rack or multi-rack leaf and spine, only the SFS L3 fabric personality is supported.
- For VxRail, please refer to the Dell VxRail 4.7.x, 7.x, or 8.x support matrix for additional details.
- For VMware product interoperability, please refer to the VMware Product Interoperability Matrix.
- OMNI software is available for download here.
- For more information, see the applicable OMNI User Guide (link in the OMNI column above) and the SmartFabric Services User Guide.
Unsupported Environments
SFS is not supported in the following environments:
- NSX-V
- VxRail L3 Everywhere

1The operating system of the host running the SFSS stand-alone containerized software package
2The operating system of the host connecting to CDC interfaces in SFSS and accessing NVMe/TCP storage
3The optional OpenManage Network Integration (OMNI) vCenter plugin creates a single pane of glass for SFSS and SFS Administration. For more information, see Dell OpenManage Network Integration (OMNI)
4See the SmartFabric Storage Software User Guide on Dell Support for the SFSS virtual machine's minimum requirements
5SFSS is interoperable with vSphere 7.0U3c to 7.0U3i, but 7.0U3f or later is required for full end-to-end NVMe/TCP, and ensures better performance when Virtual Device Node is set to "NVMe Controller" on guest VM Hard Disks.
6Dell Technologies Technical Support will only support this CDC Client when it is part of a validated Linux distribution. Linux distributions are added to this table once Dell Technologies' validation is complete. For more information on the open-source CDC client for Linux, please see Github.

Note: Where virtualization is not the preferred solution, use Ubuntu for Bare Metal on a server or appliance such as PowerEdge or VEP.

To see supported upgrade paths, see the SmartFabric Storage Software User Guide on Dell Support site.

Ethernet Switches

While there is no direct interaction between the SFSS VM and the Ethernet switches used for IP SAN, Dell Technologies has validated several switches for functionality with SFSS and NVMe/TCP.
